Backstory

The story is set in feudal Japan that is infested by flesh-eating demons. They hunt down humans in large  numbers and create a havoc in the society. Due to this, a band of warriors known as ‘Demon Slayers’ are formed specifically to hunt down these hunters.

Mind you, the demons have extreme power and supernatural abilities. The first demon, Muzan Kibutsuji, converts humans to demons by either biting them or offering his blood to drink. When someone successfully converts (some are destroyed at a cellular level) into a demon, he/she is sick with bloodthirst but also gains special powers. So, the ‘demon slayers’ gradually learned to control their breathing to enhance their capabilities.

The Sun is the original remedy for the blood-thirsty demons as sunlight instantly turns them to dust. But Muzan, the head demon, isn’t going to  rest until  he finds the blue spider-lily flower that can be turned into  an anti-sun potion. This means that the demons would be free from daylight. To avoid that, demon slayers are sent on missions to kill them and save the lives of the innocent.

Our protagonist is Tanjiro Kamado, a 13 year-old wood logger, whose father died when he was very young. He lived with his  family among the woods in the mountain. One unfortunate day, a demon arrives at their cottage and kills everyone present there. At the same time, Tanjiro had gone for work so he was saved. He returns home to blood and gore.

Suddenly, he realizes that one of his sister, Nezuko, is alive although turned into a demon. So, he embarks on a journey to  restore her back to her human form. He joins the Demon Slayer Corps and trains under the former member of the Corps and  the previous Water Hashira, Sakonji Urokodaki. Tanjiro goes on to learn Water Breathing Style under his strict mentorship.

Who Are The Hashiras?

There are five fundamental  breathing techniques or Breathing Styles and they are Flame, Water, Wind, Stone and Thunder. These styles originate from the first Breathing Style known as the Sun Breathing Style. The Hashiras are the highest ranking swordsmen who serve directly under Oyakata-sama, the head of the Demon Slayer Corps. He is a member of the Ubuyashiki family who are tasked with leading the  organization.

The 9 Hashiras are far ahead of all the demon slayers and are at the pinnacle of their respective Breathing Styles. They are Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima (who uses Stone Breathing Style), Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito(Mist Breathing Style), Snake Hashira Obanai Iguro(Serpent Breathing Style), Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind Breathing Style), Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka (Water Breathing Style), Flame Hashira Kyujuro Rengoku (Flame Breathing Style), Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji (Love Breathing Style), Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui (Sound Breathing Style), and last but not the least, Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho (Insect Breathing Style).

*spoilers ahead *

The Hashira Training Arc was much anticipated by fans. Our favorite trio of Tanjiro, Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira go to train with the dauntless Hashiras to hone their skills. Accompanying them is Nezuko, who is finally able to withstand the Sun.

She becomes the only demon to do so. As a matter of fact, Muzan senses this and goes into a bloody rage determined to find her and absorb her abilities. Despite all this, what he doesn’t know is that the demon slayers are also closing in on his location. With every high-ranking demon they kill, they get one step closer to the day of reckoning.

‘Infinity Castle’ Arc Trilogy Upsets Fans’

The Demon Slayers‘ main goal is to kill Muzan Kibutsuji as all demons originated from him. If he is killed(which seems next to impossible), then others, too, will fall down. With this hope in their hearts, our main characters take on the Hashiras’ grueling training classes. But then again this season ends with a nail-biting cliffhanger. Our heroes fall into the ‘Infinity Castle’, Muzan’s main hideout. This marked the start of the new arc that is to be made into a trilogy.

Though the new announcement was received positively at first, soon some fans of the anime quickly called out Crunchyroll. They claim that the entertainment giant is once again, “trying to milk” the arc to make multiple movies, which may not be necessary.  Nonetheless, this new arc will be a whole different level as we will get to witness the real power of  both the heroes and the villains.
