Bringing Emotions to Life

Building a sequel for the much loved “Inside Out” was in fact a challenge. The following story is an account of Joy, who has Amy Poehler’s voice and Sadness, who has Phyllis Smith.

Phil and Poehler had good chemistry between them and off tangent, funny banter that the two had during taping would be incorporated. The directors appreciated these improvisations and thus, retained a few of these ad libberism to make the characters’ dialogues more natural.

Challenges Faced During Production

New Emotions, New Challenges

Making Riley realize new emotions was one of the hardest moments in the film. This created a challenge for the creative team, to develop these new characters, while also making them new and fresh and worlds apart from the other characters, but at the same time building them into the same universe where the other characters are set. This called for almost endless brain storming, developing different looks for the characters and practicing the voice of the characters.

The major difficulty was the creation of the character called Anxiety. The team also subconsciously or consciously aimed to avoid clichéd characters and presents a better picture. They had drawn and redrew it several times and talked and debated about it several times, and only then they found a design that conveyed nervousness with a hint of vulnerability.

Technical Hurdles

The task of portraying various sentiments and the vivid environment within the main character’s mind presented some major technical difficulties. The follow-up film was intended to expand the potential of animation to even higher standards than hit first. For example, the sequence when Riley gets a wave of five emotions has to be created with a new method.

Working on account of identifying the concept of target audience, the animators worked to create a unique software through which they were in a position to mix several emotions in a sequence and in a way that made the final animation look appealing and at the same time elicit the target feelings from the target audience.

Emotional Connections

Just like with the technicality of Producing “Inside Out 2”, there was a lot of emphasis on the relations as well. Some of the participants narrated their encounters with the emotions , which are elaborated here as having impacted the storytelling.

For instance, one of the animators, was inspired by his own problems with anxiety to animate the character of Anxiety. When done to the extreme as was done by Jim, it made the character believable and many a time a relatable figure.

Collaborative Creativity

The film’s directors focused on the teamwork, and everyone involved was welcome to contribute ideas. In one of the brainstorming about what could have happened with Riley, one of the junior animators proposed to depict an event of the protagonist’s life in which she faces multiple emotions at once.

This concept was initially considered a possibility but later on served as one of the major elements of the film’s emotional progression This is possible due to the cooperative structure of the project guaranteeing more creative chances and thus – the emergence of a more interesting product.
