David Harbour Teases Thunderbolts as a “Completely New Species of Hero” in the MCU
Why Thunderbolts Are the MCU’s Most Unpredictable Team Yet: David Harbour Reveals Key Insights
Hold on vibranium shields; here are the hot new Marvel releases. But we all are here to know from David Harbour that Thunderbolts is not your regular superhero squad. You should picture them as the bumbling relatives of the Avengers who might end up letting the world burn because they can’t agree on what to do with themselves.
Since Harbour is hinting at the fact that the MCU will be getting a new sort of hero that is described as a completely new species, it seems like the MCU is about to get a lot more wild and out of control. Are you… Ready to dive into the mayhem?
The Anti-Avengers: A Team Like No Other
It’s quite different from Avengers, who are a model of order and efficiency; in contrast, Thunderbolts is a team of outcasts and antiheroes. Being a new team, this new crew is not replicating Captain America and Iron Man’s portrayal of heroes, but instead, they are presenting a lot of disorder, which has not been seen before in the MCU. As Harbour jokes on how the team isn’t exactly punctual, unlike the Avengers, and it goes to show that the film’s heroes are far from being responsible.
As Harbour says, ‘they are not even sure whether even they are heroes or villains’. They’re present-oriented, they have a short temper, and, as Sebastian Stan, the actor who portrays Bucky Barnes, noted, they tend to act on impulse. This element of surprise, or wild card mentality, is what makes the Thunderbolts so exciting. They are not your typical “heroes,” but they may be the new face of heroes that could possibly redefine the heroes genre altogether.
“A Completely New Species of Hero”
Harbour then proceeded to paint a picture of the Thunderbolts as something that the MCU has not come across before, in terms that he referred to them as “new species of hero.” It implies that these characters introduce a twist, particularly in the concept of the gray area of the superheroes, not to mention in the feature of teamwork and heroism. They are marginally less erudite, much less civil, and much more operating in the moral ambivalence range.
Apparently, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent, and others fight together, which is quite refreshing and does not follow the traditional setup of team-up that involves superheroes.
They aren’t the Avengers who help to save the world; on the contrary, these characters act depending on their selfish motives, fears, and needs for existence. This is the new species of hero, who does not keep the promise of saving the world with its moral compass but might indeed save it—by mistake, or, at least, by default.

The Cast and the Dynamic Yield: Immediate and Long-Term Outcomes
The Thunderbolts cast list is filled with such widespread personalities as Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and David Harbour as Red Guardian. Another aspect that makes one curious is how these characters, who’ve been black and white on the wrong side of the law in the previous films, will function as a team in this unconventional unit. Harbour also revealed that their chemistry that will be on-screen is so different and has never been seen before in the MCU.
Yelena from Black Widow, played by Florence Pugh, joins the team as an anti-hero who still has her spy instincts; now the affected Bucky is with a new team of mercenaries who are much shadier than he was. As for the protagonist, Wyatt’s U.S. Agent remains to be an unknown character, which also introduces an additional contentious field.
Unsurprisingly, this cast lineup has strong female characters who are wounded, and the dynamic between them is going to be interesting. They may not trust one another, and they most certainly are not about team spirit in the same sense that Avengers were, but it is part of the charm. At most they form a dysfunctional team, but I find the characters quite interesting because of their imperfections.
A Bombshell That Could Change the MCU Forever
David Harbour, who was part of the ensemble cast of ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ also teased that ‘Thunderbolts’ would greatly affect other movies in the MCU. In simple terms, he explained that there is a ‘bomb drop thing’ or an event that will definitely change the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond what has been known for. However, he has been tight-lipped about all this, and fans are already contemplating what this means for the MCU.
Could it link up to the multiverse? It may be that a new sinister antagonist will be produced, or the many members of the Thunderbolts group may possibly take a new and central position in the MCU. What’s evident is that this movie is not just another superhero flick for the MCU; this is a shift in directions. As we all know now, Marvel has grown and changed how their film series work, so one can assume that Thunderbolts will leave a lasting impact.
What Comes Next: A Thunderbolts Primer
As we approach the upcoming Thunderbolts to be released on the 2nd of May 2025, the excitement does not stop. This movie is going to be the conclusion of Phase Five in the MCU and could also act as a springboard for Phase Six. Will the Thunderbolts rise up to be the hero of the new MCU or fall to the dark side of what it takes to be a hero?
It will be interesting to see what Thunderbolt’s is going to contribute to the setting of the MCU without failing to treat fans exquisitely. Do you have the desire of seeing this new type of hero?
