As massive as the MCU has proven itself to be, the addition of characters not from the MCU fold has elicited a certain kind of interest among fans. As fascinating as Marvel has been in enriching the expanded cinematic universe let’s check out some of these interesting hybrids.
What Makes a Crossover Exciting?
But, I believe that it is important to discuss higher intentions and understand why crossover is awesome for fans. Marvel is a very comprehensive world which unites comic heroes and exists in several forms of media – comics, shows and films. When characters from two or more movies or cartoon series interact, it feels as if the hot and most loved superheroes are meeting for the first time in a much grand ceremony. There are virtually no limits to the scenarios that one could come up with, and the prospect of how these characters will get along adds for a number of interesting themes to debates.
Venom: From Sony’s Universe to the MCU
This is just one of the largest crossovers of the past years that is MCU embracing Venom. Sony’s ASM also had a rich villain in Venom, an anti-hero played by Tom Hardy, although this character was initially in the MCU before the latter disbanded. In the post-credits scene of Venom, during the trailer of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, people were presented with a short teaser showing that Venom was taken into the MCU due to the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It set up many prospects from future plots; predominantly the much-anticipated battle between Venom and Spider-Man.
The X-Men’s Future in the MCU
X-Men is another major crossover which has been long expected by the audience to appear in the MCU. When Disney bought 21st Century Fox, Marvel Studios obtained usage rights for the X-Men franchise, which, unlike some other existing franchises in cinema, had been created way before the MCU was conceptualized. Though we have not seen an actual X-Men MCU movie, they have been teased, especially with the appearance of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The few scenes that include the X-Men have left viewers questioning how the heroes will fit into the MCU and what this means for the future series.
Deadpool: Breaking the Fourth Wall in the MCU
Deadpool, better known as the Merc with a Mouth is another character that will be introduced in the MCU. As portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool is a character that has not fit the typical mold of a Marvel hero since his primary focus consists of humor and constantly making fun of the viewer. Though the prior films in this genre were made under Fox, Netflix had officially entered the MCU – though Reynolds is set to return to playing Deadpool in Deadpool 3. So with this crossover, people are keen on how Deadpool’s humor will fit into the MCU, if he’ll meet Spider-man, the Avengers, etc.
Spider-Man’s Journey Across Universes
From Till now Spider-Man is the character who is already entangled in many crossovers. Originally part of Sony’s cinematic universe, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man made his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War with the help of a brand new agreement between Sony Company and Marvel Studio. Since then, Spider-Man has become a pivotal character in the MCU, even playing a central role in multiverse-centric stories like Spider-Man: No Way Home.
There is no factual information about the character’s origin, abilities, or background that can back up the scenes of the film No Way Home. Yesterday’s meeting of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield on the big screen eliminated many boundaries between previous Spider-Man cinematic realities to the viewers’ delight.
What’s Next for Marvel’s Expanding Universe?
Concerning the MCU’s phase 4 and the subsequent phases that have started to be released, the potential for more crossovers are virtually limitless. It has been noticed already that Marvel Studios is rather open to using the concept of the multiverse, pulling characters from different time lines, universes, and even different franchises. These crossovers can range from being extremely obvious and featured heavily in the story, or entirely unnoticeable – but both enhance the universe and give the fans exactly what they want – amazing cameos.
