Jennifer Lopez's 'Marry Me' Hits Netflix Top 10
Famed 'Jenny From The Block' singer Jlo has finally collected a win in the midst of a long-run public PR nightmare.
Global star Jennifer Lopez or JLo may be facing the brunt of a long-running public scrutiny, but she has, somehow, managed to up a point for herself. Recently, it has been revealed that one of her previous movies has reached a new height. The movie, Marry Me, tanked in the Box Office on its release. However, now it has worked its way to the Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched list.
From her relationship with A-list Hollywood star Ben Affleck to her newest music album, all public ventures of JLO seemed to backfire. The “On The Floor” singer has been on the spotlight for not so good reasons. So when her 2022 romantic comedy “Marry Me”, directed by Kat Coiro, soared to the top list of most-watched movies, it was probably a breath of fresh air.
A Win for Jen!
Marry Me was released in theaters in the USA on February 9,2022, and did not live up to the mark. It underperformed grossing only earning $50.5 worldwide, against the budget of $23 million. .
Marry Me is about a famous singer, Kat Valdez, who is supposed to marry her cheating fiancé, Bastian, played by Colombian singer and rapper, Maluma. This happens during the live-screening of their marriage where the whole stage is decked up and waiting for the bride and the runaway groom.
To save herself from the massive humiliation, Kat grabs the nearest available guy, who happens to be Charlie, a regular Math teacher. The ceremony proceeds and they do get married.
Charlie Gilbert is played by another rom-com specialist, Owen Wilson. His character is a divorced dad who is forced to attend Kat Valdez’s concert by his daughter. It was a solid pairing of two seasoned actors of this genre.
It is known that Jennifer Lopez is a beautiful actress who shines in romance and drama centric films. Her rom-coms are light-hearted, cute and really great for a laidback evening watch.
The rest of the movie, in a true rom-com fashion, shows them falling in love after their hasty nuptials. Yawn? Not quite so. Though the Box Office earnings were less than desirable, the movie managed to place itself as ‘the most-streamed day-and-date title’ on the streaming platform, Peacock.
It also ranked No.4 on Netflix’s Top-10 most watched list. Moreover, it is the second-highest-rated-movie, after Kiss The Girls(1997), on the chart which is not made by Netflix. This record is a fresh break for JLo’s professional career as her criticism circulates the internet every single day.
What Went Wong with ‘Jenny From The Block’ ?
Since last year, JLo has been suffering a barrage of criticism from the public that doesn’t seem to end. She is in the spotlight from time to time and not for good reasons. Interestingly, it’s also connected to her association with The Bronx, a culturally-rich area in New York City.
JLo’s 2002 album ‘This is Me…Then’ has a hit single titled ‘Jenny From The Block’. The first person lyrics iterate that the singer, JLo, may have found success and wealth in the music industry, but she’s still ‘from the block’.
That phrase that she is from the block or from just around the corner implies that she is still a “normal” girl from around the block. Some other lyrics such as “Used to have a little, now I got a lot. I’m still….Jenny From The Block!” clearly show her associating herself with having humble beginnings.
JLo was born and raised in The Bronx, NYC, by Puerto-Rico immigrant parents. She did grow up around the block but her life wasn’t exactly as hard as she portrayed it to be. Numerous videos have been made on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube, calling JLo out on her lies.
It was revealed that she in fact did not have “just a little”. She may also have not had “a lot” but she was still studying in a private Catholic school, netizens say. You can find a multitude of videos on this topic.
Background vocalist claims she’s the singer of “Jenny From The Block”
This story doesn’t end here. Singer Natasha Ramos came forward with claims that she is the voice behind the popular catchphrase and she was never compensated fairly by JLo’s label.
Ramos is the background vocalist in the song “Jenny From The Block”. Brobilbe reports that the vocalist suspects that JLo’s vocals have been turned significantly down and the one singing the popular chorus is actually her.
Furthermore, she claims that she was only paid an overall of $3,500 for recording the background vocals for others songs on JLo’s album. She also was never credited for it. However, she thinks the fault lies more on the label than JLo herself.
What’s Next For Jenny?
Jennifer Lopez reported invested $20 million from her own pocket to fund her most recent album, titled “This is Me…Now: A Love Story.” Indeed it is a sequel to her 2002 album “This is Me…Then”. The new album tanked badly and criticism was harsh. The fans were, mostly, over the whole “narcissism” of it all.
They wanted a work of art from the popstar and not another whole album about herself. She also made a movie for the album, again starring herself, and understandably, it was received poorly by the audience. The movie now stands at a staggering 4.2/10 rating on IMDb’s website.
Nevertheless, we need not worry for the $400 million worth internationally known celebrity. Her net worth is also apparently $250 million more than Ben Affleck! Hence, we can conclude that, on that front, she will stay winning.
At 54, her body looks like she’s still in her twenties. That is not possible without years of hard work and dedication on yourself. Despite the lack of public support on her projects, JLo is significantly doing well in life.
