Greetings, Marvel Enthusiasts! Since it was conceived the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has seen a host of larger than life characters over the years and one that has held the audience’s imagination right from the first movie was Tony Stark aka Iron Man aka Robert Downey Jr. However, after his emotional farewell in Avengers: Since the movie Endgame, the fans have been wondering whether RDJ could come back to the MCU?
Well, there was groundless gossip that the superstar is planning to come back to, nevertheless there are conditions that drastically altered everything. Ok, time to talk about what could give Tony Stark back his life, and what it could imply concerning the MCU future!
The End of an Era: Tony Stark’s Legacy
It is crucial to pause for a minute and contemplate what Tony Stark and his character has brought into the MCU. Almost every character in the Marvel universe since the first Iron Man movie in 2008 was built around RDJ’s performance as Tony Stark. He was fast-thinking, highly intelligent and had a strong sense of responsibility making him one of the audience’s most favorite personalities.
Thus, Cockett became iconic not because of his charm but because of his change. Tony Stark has changed his status from a weapon-selling businessman with no care for the world to a superhero ready to die for humanity. In Endgame he hurls himself into the melting pot to use the Infinity Gauntlet to vanquish Thanos, a gesture that brings tears to people’s eyes and symbolically closes the curtain.
The One Condition: What Could Bring RDJ Back?
That’s the nutshell; the tasty part, or as the kids nowadays call it— the ‘teaser’— is Robert Downey Jr. ’s possible MCU comeback. According to recent reports, RDJ has shown interest in reprising his role as Tony Stark, but under one specific condition: the main idea in relation to it is that the story must be meaningful.
RDJ has always been on record expressing his wish to part ways with the character, which is why his return is not something he is joking about. Indeed for him, there has to be a way that Tony Stark’s comeback will make sense and at the same time bring something new to the fans. He does not desire just a gimmick, a low-budget return or a one-scene; it must be a plot that will change the game, one that breaks the mold of normalcy and restores value to the character’s progression.
How Could Tony Stark Return?
The death of Tony Stark or Iron Man was final in Endgame, so how could Marvel even consider a return without diluting the impact of the ultimate sacrifice? Here are a few potential ways: Here are a few potential ways:
1. Multiverse Shenanigans:
As much as the MCU has begun exploring the concept of the multiverse it remains plausible to see an even different version of Tony Stark on screen. This could be a Tony from a different reality that does not experience the ordinary goings-on which a person like Tony goes through. It’s a rather delicate line to toe but if navigated correctly it could provide fans with a new dynamic of the character.
2. AI Tony Stark:
In the comics Tony Stark was portrayed in a robotic suit that has the personality of Tony Stark a mentor of the new generation superheroes. This could be an interesting method to include RDJ back into the mix without erasing his character’s self-sacrifice. A new idea would be to have an AI Tony that guides the team or heroes and yet it will not be a regular hero but a new hero that takes charge.
3. Flashbacks and Cameos:
Another by way of stray brief memory jolts or by recorded or pre taped messages. This would not exactly mean that Tony Stark is back in full swing but would give the fans a view of the genius without changing the flow of time. Thus, it could have been a tribute to the already existing films and at the same time, it could have helped the MCU to progress further.
What This Means for the MCU
RDJ’s return would definitely be one of the biggest moments in the MCU but at the same time it presents some issues. The MCU continues to try and create a new generation of heroes and with such a main character being brought back it drowns out the production of characters like these. The situation is somewhat paradoxical – it is necessary to respect historical traditions while also opening the path to innovation.
But if done correctly RDJ could provide the fans with a link between the old films and new ones, thus serving as a way of establishing new stories. From the multiverse, Artificial Intelligence, to something that none of us could expect Tony Stark to be alive again may just be the boost the MCU needs.
