A Unique Talent in Hollywood

Shelley Duvall for more than thirty years was actively working as an actress in the film industry. This talented artist was born in Houston, Texas in 1949, before becoming an actress she intended to work in the cosmetics business, but fate took a hand in her life when she met director Robert Altman. This led to a casting by Altman in ‘Brewster McCloud’ (1970) and starting from this picture, Robertson entered a brilliant collaboration with Altman that resulted in many pictures.

As a result of her untypical features and a bit awkward appeal, Duvall ceased to be similar to other Hollywood Actresses. Her performances were sincere, and almost moving, which allowed her to gain the audience and the recognition of the personalities of the cinema world.

Iconic Roles: ‘The Shining’ and ‘Popeye’

Shelley Duvall’s most famous part is probably in the horror psycho type drama ‘The Shining’ directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1980. She was also successful as the woman slowly going insane in ‘The Shining’ as Wendy Torrance alongside Jack Nicholson a. k. a Jack Torrance.

Nonetheless, the torture of shooting that went on according to the director’s personal demands for multiple takes, Duvall delivered one of the best and chilling performances that could be seen in cinema history. She was believable as terrified and helpless Wendy Torrance – that’s why the audience could really sympathize with the character.

One more memorable character was Olive Oyl in the movie directed by Robert Altman ‘Popeye’ (1980) where she could watch Robin Williams naked. As to the secondary characters, Duvall did a great job; Olive Oyl was funny and awkward, and Duvall portrayed her well. Despite a relatively unknown reception, the film has today achieved the status of a cult film, and the outstanding show by Duvall.

Thus, the contributions of Duvall went beyond the acting in that subject to entertainment. She is the creator of and a producer of children’s television series ‘Faerie Tale Theatre’ which was produced in the 1980s and early 1990s featuring fairy tales with quite many Hollywood stars. It only manifested her creativity and passion for storytelling that endeared her to many, this project did it for her.

Years later, Shelley Duvall made a decision to retire from acting and become as private as possible. However, she stayed on the list of actresses preferred by the audience and coworkers, who continued to hold her in high esteem for her talent and originality on the movie scenes.
