X-Men ’97: A New Chapter for a Classic Series

X-Men ‘97 is an animation revival of the popular X-men anime series which started in 1992 and ended in 1997. The new series takes the action somewhere from the original series, stopped bringing back familiar settings and characters while introducing a new lot of mutants to the family.

The Season 1 premiered back in 2023, collected great appreciation for the mature approach of storytelling. Fans were offered not only about the history of the X-men, including The Mutant Genocide and The Cure for Mutants, balance between the characters. The Season 1 had 10 mesmerizing episodes where the X-men triumphed over obstacles around the globe, but the last episode was dramatic enough that makes every fan curious about what next.

What We Know About Season 2

By the end of the Season 1, the X-Men were able, to go back in time and discover a younger, more vibrant version of one of the oldest and most powerful mutants in Marvel history – Apocalypse.

However, the mid-credit scene presented the current version of Apocalypse looking over the ruins on Genosha, which perhaps indicates that he will have a significant part to play in this upcoming season. Does this proves that maximum part of this storyline will be spent on the ascension of Apocalypse’s power?

Marquand’s statement that the tone will be much darker, is understandable if one looks at the reasons behind the change; it will be focusing on Apocalypse, who by the way can make any X-Men fan cringe at the very thought of him.

The Darker Side of X-Men ’97

It’s clear, Season 1 did not avoid any possible opportunity to be dark as it can, so what does Marquand mean when he says darker? In season 1, the shocking death of Gambit occurred – a death that many fans still recall since it was shortly after Gambit and Rogue declared their love for each other. If Gambit appears in Season 2, he may end up rising with Apocalypse becoming one of his Four Horsemen which will result in a heartbreaking conflict against his former allies.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, are very notorious for being destructive spirits, and if Gambit become one of them, it will for sure bring about more rift among the X-men. This dilemma may be the essence of the darkness in Season 2. Being evil will not be the only challenge the X-men will face, as they will also have to deal with the threat of losing a comrade to evil.

Apocalypse’s Role in Season 2

Apocalypse is a character who views life in the ‘survival of the fittest’ mode and possesses an impression of a villain with divine capabilities. If he were to appear in Season 2, it would raise the stakes not simply for the X-Men in the sense of having to fight for their lives, but for the very existence of all mutants.

The idea of time travel is always a fascinating concept for everyone whereas it is clearly visualised in Season 1’s finale: the X-Men restored and hinted at some time travelling. Moreover, X Men purposefully travel into different time zones, in order to fight with Apocalypse.

Will the X-Men Overcome Their Darkest Hour?

Apocalypse is not only a threat, but an emotional trauma that leaves havoc in the X-Men’s emotions. This Season 2 will be a more difficult experience than the previous one. In terms of storylines, the X-Men has always put forward the theme of fighting back, and Season 2 could also cover how they rise above even seemingly impossible odds.

One question that arises for the fans is this: How will the characters we love cope with these events? Will Gambit be back ? How will the team handle the threat of Apocalypse but without dealing with him directly? Well, time will tell, however what is known is that you will not regret watching this season.
